The second annual Smart Manufacturing Technology Exposition (SmartMTX.ca) hosted by the MEE Cluster was a great success.  Held May 15 and 16 at Westerner Park, Red Deer, the expo hosted nearly 150 manufacturing and service companies alongside six post-secondary institutes, all levels of government, and various industry associations.

Participants attended sessions to learn about the importance smart technology and manufacturing best practices play in overcoming challenges facing Western Canadian manufacturers.  Investment in technology plays a crucial role in keeping Canadian manufacturers competitive on the global stage as Canada is lagging in productivity compared to other major economies.  The ever-growing labour shortage can also be alleviated by doubling down on digital tools, automation, and best practices.

Expo highlights included panel discussions on sustainability in manufacturing, the growing EV value chain in Western Canada, application of robotics in welding as well as Keynotes by the Honorable Danielle Smith and John Weigelt, Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Canada.  The Premier joined for the evening Networking Reception and took the opportunity to tour the exhibition to learn about the latest manufacturing solutions on display from across North America.

Another highlight was a demo of the StrongPrint3D Intrepid concrete 3D printer.  The printer wowed attendees by printing onsite throughout the two days. The printer was part of the first of its kind and unique Canadian Sustainable Concrete 3D Printing Conference.  The conference was one of three hosted at the SmartMTX this year.  The others focused on bringing together Additive Manufacturing expertise from across the province and helping manufacturers get informed on Lean Manufacturing practices.

Nearly 80 percent of attendees indicated they increased they increased their understanding of advanced manufacturing technologies and processes as a result of attending the show and 75% percent of participating companies indicated they identified a solution that has potential to enhance their business.
